The Texas Legislature’s latest proposal to increase the homestead exemption from $45,000 to $70,000 is just another political stunt offering little real relief for Texans. While it may temporarily slow the rise in property taxes, it doesn’t address the root cause—out-of-control government spending. This whitepaper argues that the homestead exemption only benefits homeowners, leaving renters and businesses behind, and contributes to an inefficient and unfair tax system. To provide true property tax relief, Texas must freeze school M&O property taxes, use state surpluses to buy down these taxes, and limit spending growth.
